What is the Knitmed Foundation?

The Knitmed foundation’s mission is to kick start the healing process of someone suffering from trauma. This trauma may have been caused due to a demise or an illness or an emotional shock that has affected their mental and emotional state.

Our mission

Our mission

The Knitmed foundation’s mission is to kick start the healing process of someone suffering from trauma. This trauma may have been caused due to a demise or an illness or an emotional shock that has affected their mental and emotional state.

Our method of healing would be to use a form of craft, for instance, crochet, macrame, knitting or amigurumi as a source of therapy to precipitate that healing process. Our latest research which we have undertaken with our research partners Kantar (2021) has shown us how many people (are willing to / currently don’t) use a form of crafting.

We’re threading communities together

We’re threading communities together

With this front of mind, we have chosen (in conjunction with the Knitmed Foundation) to donate our very first knitting machines to a very small remote village in the north west mountain region of Pakistan. We want to support this mountain community which live in a region that has extreme temperatures and would benefit from some ‘warm woolies’ during their exceptionally cold winter season. The temperatures can drop as low as -20 to -30C.

We will be organising fortnightly machine knitting classes online for the community in their knitting centre and we will translate the classes into their local languages and email the notes out to them every week. We will be teaching them how to knit simple but warm and practical sweaters, scarves, gloves and masks for their communities which will keep them safe and warm during the winter season.

“Our aim is to build on this research and use crafting as a form of therapy and as a healing agent within our development programmes.”

Our Programmes

Our Programmes

The development programmes we undertake will aim to foster a community spirit and where there is an active community lifestyle setting, we will seek to use group crafting sessions to deepen the bonds of that community.

We will aim to enable people who are struggling with trauma and ailing mental health to build a support network so as to avoid isolation and to be able to reach out to someone if they need to, for help. They can use our crafting classes as an outlet to find some release and some peace.
